5 MIDDLE GRADE NOVELS WITH TOUGH TOPICS

Real kids have real problems. And they benefit from meeting characters with similar dilemmas. #MGGetsReal focuses on a few middle grade novels that can help readers navigate life's struggles.

We, the authors, are giving away a set of five novels that get real about tough topics. The giveaway is for teachers, home school parents, and school librarians in hopes that these stories will be incorporated into the educational experience.

Issues involved are Alzheimers, School Integration, Post-war trauma, the bombing of Hiroshima, and the 9/11 attacks.

Our books have other themes as well. Common ingredients are change, relationship struggles, and of course, hope! We believe your students will find friends in the pages of these books.

We'll give away the set of books starting on August 16. Please note the Rafflecopter widget at the bottom of this post.

We're participating in a number of other blogs this month also and some of those involve individual book contests. We're linking to those blogs at the top right hand side of this page. You'll find more info about each of us in the sidebar.  We'd love to hear from you!

The Authors:

Shannon Wiersbitzky,  Shannon Hitchcock, Joyce Moyer Hostetter,  Kathleen Burkinshaw,  Kerry O'Malley Cerra

    1. I think any group of writers could do something similar. All it takes is a common theme and a time commitment.

  3. Yes, I agree. Any group of author could band together for a similar marketing effort. It's been a great learning experience for me and I mad good friends and read terrific books as a result!

  4. Hello Joyce, Kathleen, Kerry, and Shannon x2! I am also a middle grade novelist who writes about tough issues (living with a brachial plexus injury, being a burn victim, getting diagnosed with scoliosis). I have two mid-grades published through Harvest House. If you're interested, I'd love to send you a copy of my first book, My Name is River, and it's sequel, Hope Girl, as I'd love to be considered for being a part of your book list. My website is www.wendydunham.net if you would like to see my background. I absolutely love how the five of you have banded together for the sake of middle grade readers who need books that deal with real life issues.

I hope to hear from you,
    Sincerely,

    Wendy Dunham

    1. Hi Wendy, I am so sorry that we have failed to see your comment and respond to you. I've passed your request on to the other ladies. Your books certainly seem to qualify as tough topics for middle graders and our comprehensive list created and maintained by Kerry O'Malley Cerra does have an illness category. All best! Joyce
